VESSEL IN A PARLOUS POSITION
BEACHED IN QUICK TIME
r MOVEMENTS OF RELIEF STEAMERS.
DUNEDIN, Jan. 5. The Waikare is in a parlous position. It is feared that her back will break.
From the meagre information supplied it is quite clear that the damaged steamer was beached in remarkably quick time. This was necessary owing to the depth of water in the immediate vicinity. The Waikare was making her fourteenth trip to the Sounds, and this was the first occasion on which she had met with.any mishap. The Moura left Port Chalmers at 8.20 this morning. She will arrive at the Bluff to-night, and expects to meet the.- Pioneer returning from Dusky Ba"y. If necessary, the Moura will proceed to the Waikare's assistance.
The tug Terawhiti, with salvage equipment, under the control of Mr Daniels, the Company's salvage expert, will be ready to leave Wellington to-mght if advised that this is necessary. The Rosamond arrived at Bluff this morning, having passed Puysegur Point m the night without being Intercepted As H.M.S. Pioneer has proceeded to the scene the Rosamond will not go. The Waikare is badly damaged.
The Waikare was built at Dumbar189/ b-L Denny Bros -> and f lo, ng> with a beam of 41ft and depth 21ft. Her power is 3000 h.p., and her gross register 3071 tons, this being reduced to 1901 by net register. She is built of steel, and was registered sat Dunedm m 1897. The Wssel is most luxuriously fitted, and is a great favourite for the Sounds excursions. Capt. Newton, who took her to the bounds on her last trip, is a mariner of long experience, his command previous to the Waikare being the Manuka, end previous to her, the Maori. Capt. J. Bernech generally took the Waikare on her trips to the Sounds.
iMr Revell, the local manager cf the Union Company, received a tele-1 gram at midnight last night acquainting him of the mishap, and stating that the Mbura was to be despatched as soon as possible. This morning Mr Revell' received another message, stating that H.M S Pioneer left Bluff at j> a.m. for ; Dusky Somid, and expected to iej turn with; ttie: passengers and crew at i 9 p.m. .Sir Jbseph Ward accompanj ied the warship. i The Waikare left Duneduion De- ! eember 30 on her second; summer ex- ! cursioii to the West Co^st Sounds, Staking the following passengers'. i Mesdames Ayres^ Allen, !giwn, > Grawshaw, Corbett, Hargi'e'a^es, | Mahon,!
