[PRESS iilßsbciATlON.] WELLINGTON, Jan. 4. The annual meeting of the Nevy 'Zealand Educational Institute opened to-day, Mr MacDonaid (Dun'e'dm) presiding.. . The".Mayor (Dr. Newman), welcomed the delegates on behalf of the city. .He emphasised 'the fact that education mttst go -forward' in the ,pathof progi-ess. They would have to :pay the best salaries to the best' .men and women to do/the.best work jfchat could 6e done in ,the community. \ Mr■ Robert Lee; (chairman of the Education Board) also welcomed the' ■delegates. ■ Mr Mac Donald, in his presidential address, said that national education was the only safeguard that the. democracy possessed. The teachers' .first consideration should be the production of a good animal man with. physical and mental strength. But either ., without moral stamina, was a.po3itiye danger to the community. There had to be-harmonious development of the physical, mental and imoral sides of the child's nature.
