AUCKLAND, Jan. 3. At the chass congress Hicks defeated Davies, and scored his first win. James beating Kolling.

Later. In the seventh round of the chess championship which is now being played, Davies beat James, Barnes beat Severne, and Rolling lost to Griorson. The remaining ganjes are m progress.

These sports were held at Okaramio on New Year's Day and were well attended." The attendance would have been much larger, had not the Renwick people been debarred from going, through the rivers being in flood. All the events were well contested, and a good day's sport- was provided. The officials, under the direction of Mr Sneider, the capable ancl energetic secretary, carried out their various duties in a manner befitting a larger meeting. These sports are assuming greater popularity every year, and before long should take a place as one of the leading athletic gatherings of the province. The wants of the inner man, both liquid and solid, were catered for in first-class style by Mr H. McGiiire of the Okaramio Hotel. The'legal games were under the control of Mr J. Pound ancl a refreshment stall was also on the ground. A large number of events for children were got off during the day. The committee, should consider the .advisability of securing the services of a band for future gatherings, as music is one of the best means of keeping the public interested between the events. Following are the results:

Maidn Foot Race, 100 yards: J Lewis 1, J. Nees 2. " Five starters.

Boys' Race (under 16 years): C. McLean 1, V. Jenner 2. Six starters.

440 Yards Handicap: J. Strickland (23 yards) 1, W. A. Terrill (scr) 2, J. Lewis (35 yards) 3. This was anyone's race until the straight was reached, when Strickland drew away. Terrill put in a strong challenge, but just missed winning. J. Butler (15 yards), G. Mclntyre (15 yards), H.-L. Ewart (25 yards) and P. Neville (28 yards) also ran. Butler and Mclntyre did not finisE.

High Jump Handicap: J. Jackson (scr.) sft. 3-2-in. 1, J. Lewis (4in.) sft. 3^in. 2. There were seven competitors.
