WELLINGTON, Jan. 3. The steamer Anglo-Saxon, which lert tor London on Friday evening returned on Saturday morning. <=" When four hours out the evaporator exploded in the engine-room, blowing the clnei- engineer, Francis Lawrence to pieces. He was bending over it at the time, and received the full force or the explosion. Part of his head was blown away; one leg was broken, another mangled' and the body scalded and burned ali over.

The engines had been stopped through a fault in the steam-pipe leading to the steering-gear. Nono- of the witnesses were* able to account for the explosion, and a verdict of accidental death was returned.
