WHY THE BUDGET WAS REJECTED.
WHAT THE UNIONISTS OFFER
LONDON, Jan. 1. Mr Lloyd-George, speaking at the Queen's Hall, said that 'had the Budgets become flaw great progress would have been made with land valuation, and would nave proved that the landlords had escaped a considerable portion of their fair taxation. The Bud- ; get was rejected because trade was improving so rapidly that the cry of unemployment would have been use-, less.
Lord Northcote, in a speech at Branxsome, said that the tariff, unlike the Ten Commandments or the multiplication table, was a business arrangement for securing the people's welfare. The Unionists offered not leaseholds under corporations, but freeholds, and employment instead of insurance against unemployment.
