IN MODERATION.
" Strict moderation," was advocated by the Scottish elder in regard to drink. r
"Eh, mon;" he observed solemnly to the ne'er-do-weel, " it's this conteenual drinking that's the ruin o' mony a duel beside yersel'. Mind ye, I admeet a mon may tak' a wee drappie when he wakes i' the morn to clear awa' the nicht vapors, an' I'm no against a mon taking a mutchkin to doon his pairritch at breakfast time, an' I wadna' stop him fra drinking his forenoon dram, or anither to whet his appetite for his dinner, an' aiblins he'll want anitlur to settle it, an' I dinna say a word against a stoup i' the afternoon, an' a drink or twa i' the evening, while a quid stiff cup for a nichtcap isna indulgence—it's just necessity. Gin a mon avull bide by moderate rules like these I dinna see hoo a mon's going to be any the waur; but it's this conteenual drink, drink, drinking that plays auld Clootie wi' a body!"
