GISBORNE, May 1. John Wilson,, who was arrested for burglary at Kaiti, and who pleaded guilty and was committed to Auckland! for sentence, escaped from the lock-up this morning. He has not yet been arrested.

A man named John Watkiri, who was committed yesterday to the Auckland mental hospital on a charge of lunacy, jumped overboard from the? steamer Tuatea while the latter was proceeding to place him on board the Victoria this morning. The constable; in attendance grabbed him by the leg* as he jumped over the rail, but was unable to hold him, and Watkin dropped into the water, and was not seen1 again.
