FAULTS OF "THE TRADE."
The practises adopted by some publicans in breaking the laws1 of the country must be repugnant to a. large number of men engagedl in. a legitimate business. Complaints \ agaainst evils of the trade are ait present very prevalent locally ; more especially in /regard, to the dispensing of adulterated iiquor or the 'retailing of cheap spirits out of bottles of well-knowm amd popular airtides, such as Wolfe's Schnapps. Information has recently been, 'received by the proprietors of this spirit that will lead some of the offenders in this1 latter respect into very serious trouble, ias the proprietors of Wolfe's Schnapps have determined not only to protect themselves and the reputation! of their article, but laAso the general public against such fira-uds. In an advertisemeint published in this issue in another column -a reward of £50 is offered for such information which will lead to the conr viction of any person carrying on these ■reprehensible practices, and it is announced that any1 information ma-y be supplied to the- solicitors of the Udolpho Wolfe- Company, Messrs Chapman and Tripp, of Wellington. Offenders may be ignorant of the very grave risk they are incunring, amd for their information it is set out that "om conviction on indictment they become liable to imprisonment up to two years, or to fine, or to both fine and imprisonment.'' The liquor traffic presents many difficult social problems, but the least that cam be done is to see that what liquor is sold shall be -am honest article -and true to label.
