Mr J. H. Fowler, G&v&rnwent audit inspector for the Auckland South district, has been transferred' to in succession to Ma* John King, who, is being retired, having reached the age limit. Mr Fowler is a son, of the late Mr James Fowler, of Blenheim. The ground he will cover during the course of his visits will include Mariborough.
The death occurred on Friday last (says tho Nelson Colonist) of Mr William George Murray, formerly Commissioner of Crown Lands for this, district, Mr Murray retired from, active service a liitle over two years. ago, on account of ill-health, and he continued to reside here. The late Mr Murray was born in Banffshire, Scotland; where he was educated and trained in his profession as a surveyor. He came to the Dominion when about twenty years of afge, and in 1867 entered the Survey Department at Hokitika, where he SGeryed under Mr iSMalcolm Fraser (afterwards Sir Malcolm Fraser, of We*ternj, Australia);. He was an lett&rgeiie •'and capab% officer, and in 1872.. lie waa. promoted to the position of D^istrict Surveyor at Ross. Subsequently he attained^ the position of Compiission^r pis Crown1 Lands and Chief Surveyor for Westland. In 1902 he was transferred to Nelson to a.similar position. In 1872 Mr Murray was married to Miss Smith, and his wife survives him. also two. sons and a daughter (Mrs C. H. Broad). Mr Murray's age was 67 years.
