Steady rain fell all night at Christchurch, and a thick drizzle continued to-day. This is the first rain for the last three weeks.

The Garrison Band, in, another column, announce that an honorary concert will be given in the Town Hall on Tuesday evening, _when anexcellent programme consisting of instrumental items by the band, and vocal items by the best local talent, will be given.

The Feilding Borough Council, at a special meeting yesterday, passed a resolution for the Town Cleric to telegraph to the Valuer-General, stating that the Council were dissatisfied with the excessive valuation, and asking that an officer of the Department visit Feilding to confer with the Council.

The Motueka Harbour Board is tak- ' ing steps to raise a loan of £13,000 j foi harbour improvements, and the 1 poll is to be held on Monday. There : is no sign of our Harbour Board maki ing any effort in the same direction.

Interviewed in Christchurch, the Hon. Mr Fowlds stated that there was no intention on the part of the Government to bring about the fusion of the smaller education districts with the larger ones. There was also no intention to touch teachers' salaries, which were raised only last year.

Mr J. Duncan, M.P., received a telegram from Sir Joseph Ward on Wednesday, to the effect that he had authorised tenders to be caiieu for the erection of the railway bridges between Waipara and Blenheim. There is something vague and indefinite about this information which further information will probably make clear.

Practically every place in New Zealand reported rain at 9 o'clock this morning, and a large proportion also recorded gales from the nor'-west. At Russell, Castlepoint, New Plymouth, and Farewell Spit the sea was heavy, and at fifteen other places it was either rough or considerable. The thermometer ranged from 70 at Gisborne to 49 at Timaru and Clyde. The Blenheim reading was 65.

In regard to rapid cabling, the Prime Minister has received a letter from Mr R. H. Heaton, stating that there were four great inventors who proved in his presence that they could send 500 words in the space of 30 minutes over the cables: The Trime Minister remarks (says a Wellington telegram) that this news is most reassuring, for a great obstacle in the way of cheapening cable communication js the capacity of the cables.

It will se seen, from the report of last night's meeting,' which appears in another part of this issue, that the proposal to hold a band contest in Blenheim was very favourably received, and it is pleasing to note that the feeling which existed at the meeting is re-echoed outside . s Before lunch to-day the secretary, Mr Ed. Parker, had obtained guarantees for the whole of the amount of the prizemoney. This is practically only a matter of form, but it is one of the rules of the North Island Brass Bands Association that such a guarantee should be made. Evidently the Blenheim public have faith in the ability of the contest to prove an unqualified success.

A Christchurch telegram states, that Mr V. G. Day, S.M., was farewelled yesterday by the Christchurch Law Society: Mention was made of Mr Day's four and a-half years' service in the district, during which he had been on. the best of terms with the profession, who felt keenly his leaving. Mr Day has been transferred to Timaru, but will sit at Ashburton and Rakaia also.

At Kaiwara, in the Amiira district (states the Lyttelton Times), Mr Reginald Wilson had an encounter on Friday with an unusually large wild boar, a piebald of the black and Tamworth type. Mr Wilson's horse almost trod on the boar, which Avas asleep, and on being disturbed theanimal hesitated, -enabling Mr Wilson to send a charge of shot into his right eye. The boar and Mr Wilson's dogs had a sharp encounter, but another shot disabled him, and he was soon despatched. The animal's skin, trimmed and cleaned of fat, weighs 901b, and the tusks are very large. It is thought'that the boar is one of which traces have been seen in the I district for some years. i
