A SUCCESSFUL CARNIVAL AND BAZAAR.
The parishioners of St. Mary's Church have held many kinds of functions in aid of their church and
convent school, but none of the mag-
nitride of the present combined entertainment and business function, the grand national carnival and "bazaar. It is rarely indeed that the •ultimate expectations of the pro- 1 moters of an institution are fully realised, but it can safely be said that the carnival and bazaar that is "being held nightly in tjfe Town Hall will be the exception to the; general tule, and that -the highest expectations of Father Holley, the Committee and the parishioners as a; wliole will be not only realised but! also exceeded. It is almost incon-i ceivable that a bazaar that has been running for over ten nights and an equal number of afternoons should have an increased and popular attraction for such a large section of the community each night. The addi-
tional support that is accorded the
movement every day should serve as an excellent refutation of incredulous opinions expressed by sceptics as to tlie promoters being able to continue the bazaar and carnival for tlie period intimated at the outset. It is only a mild expression to say, in describing the extraordinary resources of the institution, that they are amazing. The entire institution is a great lesson to men in the commercial world, and there are many in this town who would do well to profit from the excellent instruction that is afforded therefrom in the matter of progression and energy and industry. Tho system in vogue at the Town Hall will bear investigation in every way, which goes to show indirectly the wonderful potentialities of Blenheim and its contiguous -districts, and what could be accomplished if the place was governed by men of progressive views. The Mayor when opening the bazaar
touched the key-note of the success it is achieving, when he said the commercial v/orld had lost the services of a great man in the person of the Rev. Father Plolley, as the function has demonstrated in no un-
convincing manner the great
pro-
gress that could be accomplished in Blenheim by a man of his progressive power of mind. When a leader possessing those qualifications is supported by an army of industrious assistants it is n;>t to bo wondered at that whatever is taken in hand is an absolute success. Signor Borzoai has ably seconded Father Holley, and in the face of great odds, which have been very trying and have also occasioned much worry, has exceeded
all his previous brilliant performances, and it is due to that fact that the attendance at the Town Hall
every night has been so large. It is
well that the Committee has supported Father Holley in his decision
to set apart Monday evening next for the purpose solely of giving Signer Borzcni a benefit. If anything
wnfi wanting in the way of a demonstration of appreciation of the Signor's great feat, it lias been supplied by the practical recognition of the excellent services rendered by a past master in tlio terpsichorean ai;t. Mr H. V. Browne find Mr Perrin, joint secretaries, Jiayo excelled in their
dual capacity, and t-\vo better officials could not have been selected. The other officials have done good service, and their splendid work is to lie recognised in a proper way. The dancing last night was very good, the Minuet, although two couples short of the original number, was perfectly done, which shows that there is no one indispensable. The bazaar will be open again to-night, when the same good carnival xir0 ~ gramme will be gone through. Following are the names of winners of further prizes: —England, Mrs Hughes; Ireland, M. O'Brien; Scotland, J. Poppleton; Scotland, Miss Handley; Canada, Miss Holcroft; Scotland, Mrs McCabe; New Zealand, Agnes Anderson; England, H. Wilkinson ; Scotland, T. Farr; England, J.
