RIFLE SHOOTING
MEETING AT GREYTOWN
The Walrarapa Rifle Association's seventeenth annual meeting was concluded at Greytowh om Tuesday (says the Post). The weather was dull, but the shooting throughout was of a high Order of merit. Th© veteran, R. J. King, of the Opaki Rifle Club, won the championship with an aggregate score of 312, the "runner-up" being Trooper Marenzi, of the Heretaunga Mounted Rifles, who was only a point behind. Private Welsford, of the Alexandra Rifles, Otago, was third, with a score of 306. King receives the gold medal, challenge cup, valued at twenty guineas, and Mr J. 0. Bidwill's challenge shield, which carries with it a special gold medal, also presented by Mr Bidwill. Tne challenge cup presented by Mr W. C. Buchanan,^ M.P., for the highest aggregate scorer in the Masterton, Carterton and Gtreytown* matches, ■and is only open to competitors; residing in the Wairarapa electorate, was won by Trooper -iviairenzi, of the Eketahuna Mounted Rifles, with a score of 191, R. J. King being "runner-up" four points behind. The Masterton match, 200 and 600 yards, seven shots at each, was won by Rifleman G. Craw, Liniton, with a score of 66. Lieutenant Irvine, of Nelson, made a similar score, but was placed second on the "count back." Rifleman Thomas, of Petone, scored 63, and won £1; he was seventh on the list.
In the Greytown match, 500 and 700 yards, seven shots at each, Rifleman R. J. King (Opaki) was first with a score of 66, Rifleman Mclntosh, from the same club, coming second with 64. Rifleman J. G. Wilson (Petone) was ninth, with 61.
The Featherston match was ten shots each at 800 and 900 yards. Rifleman Cameron (Opaki) took first prize wtih a score of 89. Sergt. James (Napier) scored the isame* total, but was placed second on the "count back." Rifleman Marshall (Karori) was ninth with a score of 82 (43 and 39), and Rifleman J. Turner (Petone) came twelfth with 81 (42 and 39).
The teams match was won by the Opaki Club with a score of 1500, Petone being isecond with 1451. The scores of the Petone team were: J. G. Wilson 295, H. Marshall 293, J. Turner 291, W. Thomas 278, and J. Wilson 285.
In the W.F.C.A. match—soo yards, ten shots—Rifleman A. J. Cameron (Opaki) was the winner with a score of 49; Rifleman R. J. King (Opaki) was second with 48, and Rifleman McLeay (Opaki) third wita a similar score.
The Last Try mateh —500 yards, ten shots—was won by President Masefield (Sounds) with 47. In winning easily from such teams as .Marlboroughy Hawke's Bay, and Auckland, the Opaki Club put up a sterling performance, seeing that in a team of five Marlborough had three New Zealand representatives in Irvine, Masefield and Hadfield. The Auckland team included such fine shots as Kingston, Edgecumbe, Maingay and Potter.
