COLLECTION OF RATES.

EXTREME MEASURES TO BE

TAKEN

The Secretary of the Lower Wairau River Board 'at! .last night's meeting of that body " reported that he was experiencing considerable difficulty in the matter of collecting rates, and the amount of £578 16s 7d (£4BB Is 9d special rate and £90 'iis lOd general rate) would take about five months to get in. The financial year of the Board closed on March 31, and there was not -a great deal of time left in which to collect aie amounts. On the 31st of March last only £68 of rate arrears were outstanding, but it would appear that the old order of tilings of years gone' by was again to be resurrected. For years, at the end of the financial year, the total amount of uotstanding rates was from £400 to £500. He asked for_ instructions to deal with the defaulting ratepayers. '. ■ _ Mr McKay suggested that the question of the collection of rattes be left in the hands of thei chairman and secretary. . - • • ■

The Chairman replied that the matter of collecting rates was purely one for the ssere^ry. Mr McCaliu.ni thought that the secretary should be instructed by the Board as to what action he should take in order to get in the outstanding amounts. It was proposed by, Mr McKay, and seconded by Mr'McCallum "That the secretary summon for all outstanding rates after having given isieven days' -notice of such intention." — Carried. :

The secretary reported that the Board's credit balance at the- bank to date was £115 and some odd shilling®, out of which amount had to be paid accounts totalling over £113, which left a balance of £2 10s.
