ANNIVERSARY DAY.
£HrcHß«t;Bionißii orei. , To-day, being the, forty-ninth anniversary of the proyinQey^vas observed as a public holiday throughout Marlborough, the Banks, most of; ••-the business places and stehbbls being closed to Allow people to ' enjoy "a good whole holiday." The attractions presented to this end were by no means limited. The races at Dashwood atracted a good many patrons of. the turf.,: and .the.cricket 1 match between the Wairau,, Club, and; High School held out an, inducement to the cricket-loving public, thpugh some disappointment was .expressed at the failure of Havelock to fulfil their engagement. Thfe'various Sunday schools liad fhejr annual picnics, the numerous small picnickers being conveyed tb: Meadowbank (Church of Enpland) and the ; Taylor Pass (Methodist) per mediiim of traction- j engines to which ' waggons were 'hitched (in lieu of a star probably).. The Presbyterian Sunday school went to Essori's Valley for their picnic,; and favoured with glorious weather,J the picnickers would no doubt enjoy themselves to the fullest capacity. It would be interesting ;■■ to know how many of Blenheim's juvenile population celebrated Marlborough's anniversary by a day in the country. | In addition to these .functions of a1 more or less public nature, numerous j small bands of picnickers and pleas-ure-seekers went ', rpuf,qf toAvn" to enjoy the luxury of a day away from the busy cares of everyday occupations. ~■. •
