HAVELOCK.

[TROM OUR CORRESPONDENT.] . Saturday. Yesterday afternoon MisaX Powell, captain of the Takoreke Club, entertamed some members, off £ Club Unfortunately heavy ram and hail teu at 3 p.m. which prevented-several from a distance being present. An observation competition, kepti the guests busy during the first part ot the afternoon, Miss L. Orsnaan winning the prize for remembering and writing down 36 articles out of 40 placed on a toy. Songs .were sung by Mrs A. . Mills (Blenheim), and Misses Hunter and V. Powell, alter which tea and cakes were partaken of The table decorations were blue and white violets, the club's colours, and each guest upon amyaLwas presented with a bunch of violets, so that all wore the Takoreke's colours. A special feature was the awarding ot the prizes. The Rev. A. W. Stace, as President of the Takorek© Hockey Club congratulated the club on the progress it had made, often under adverse circumstances, since the inception of the club three years ago., me club had managed to hold its own in a. very creditable manner. Atintrfiist match the team had no less than five gaps, which were filled by quite young girls, yet nevertheless they were not beaten, which spoke volumes for "the rising hockey players. Now that the hockey season was over it was with1 great pleasure that he heard there was a movement on foot to start a girls' cricket club to provide healthy exercise and recreation during the summer' months, and until they resumed hockey. He wished them every success in their new venture. He then presented the prizes, which were as follows-.-Miss'A. Smith, the President's prize for most regular attendant, having attended twenty-two practices, a silver hockey brooch, with the initials T.H.C. j Miss J. Orsrnan tied for same place and received from Miss E. 11. Gwillim a ladies _ companion. The same young lady won Mrs E. Powell's trophy, a hockey brooch, for the youngest player who had made the most progress during the season. Miss Annie Orsman received a silver-mounted hat-pin stand, for best -three-quarter in the club. Mi=s C. Pickering was presented with a very handsome silver-mounted Tiockev stick suitably inscribed, the j gift of Mr W. Hutcheson jun.,ior. best forward player in the club. The captain was then presented with a •nrftttilv designed silver jewel case, gven.by Mr hunter for the best back fn the club. The President, remarked that the duties of a Secretary were ■very onerous, and the success of the club very much depended upon the i lament and activity of anyone filling that position.. He was pleased to say that Miss Elsie Gwilhm had filled the position excellently, and it was the desire of the club that some small memento be given to her, and he had much pleasure in handing her. a silver hair-pin case. The recipient, in a tew words, thanked them for the unexpected gift. This concluded the prizes. A hearty vote of thanks was carried to Mr, Mrs and Miss Powell for their interest in the matter, and for the excellent entertainment pro-' vided for them that afternoon. Mr Powell responded on behalf of himself, Mrs Powell and daughter, and proposed a hearty vote of thanks to their President (Mr Stace), who had always taken a keen interest in the healthy physical development of the young ladies in their midst, and had in fact, in every way, made an excellent President.

The bachelors' ball, which took place last night, was very successful. A full account will be sent by Monday's mail.
