THE INVITATION NOT ACCEPTED.
LOVE FOR ALSACE-LORRAINE,
PROMISE OF PEACE
(Received Sept. 13, 4.30 p.m.) BERLIN, Sept. 12
Time did not permit the Kaiser to •cross the frontier and visit Hohneck, but he thanked the French Government for its courtesy.
Later, at Golmar, replying to the
Burgomaster's address, the Kaiser expressed himself as touched at the great affection and enthusiastic warmth of the reception accorded him overywhere in Alsace-Lorraine and Colniar, alike
with the" whole of the beautiful country of which it formed part.
"I joyfully watch their development," he said: "Thanks be to God that He brought the fruitage under the protection of the German Eagle
and under my standard, and please Ood that it never be disturbed. 35 The country had undergone vicissitudes, but was now able to extend and develop itself in peace; "for peace,"
added the Kaiser, "will be maintained
and the country be able to flourish, and "thrive. Colmar and all Alsace may rest assured that they have a specially
safe and warm corner in my heart."
