PICTON.

[prom otjb, correspondent.] . Monday. A diver arrived from Wellington on Friday evening, and early the next morning commenced operations to recover the Arahura's lost propeller. The weather was, beautifully iine, and during the greater part of the day, an interested group of spectators assembled on the end of the wharf to watch the proceedings. Various methods were adopted to endeavour to locate the lost piece of machinery. The operators working from a moored punt as a centre put out grappling irons in different directions, and when something solid Ayas struck the driver made a descent and searched the sea bottom for some time without success. Next, two boats manned by strong crews dragged from either end a heavy chain along the bed of the harbour. ' The work was carried out systematically, section by section of the bottom being searched, and to-day, favoured by another beautiful day, the; work was crowned with success., The object of the ■■■ search was located, the* diver went down and fastened on a sling which i wasi buoyed in readiness for the Penguin, which arrived this evening, when this large propeller, weighing about two tons, ; was hauled up. After her mishap on Wednesday the Arahura -made her. return trip on Saturday, and as she cam© up. the Sounds she passed the, old Penguin outward bound. ! When the former vessel'hove in sight she was greeted with; loud 'tooting tof the fog. horn ; expressive of delight at seeing the Arahura on her old run again after Iher mishap. The ineeting of the vessels was quite a pleasant incident indicative of the Aseh^iment which ■exists among sailor*}.; r ; A well-attended of rnern-^ bers of the Picton Bowling Club Ayas lieldAon Friday evening.l After; the jninutes had been Jead the meeting iJUdjournediout of sjinpathy wjth the relatives of: the late Miss ,Seymourj ■oh the motion of Mi Stuart, seconded iby Air Madsen; It was also decided, <onKte motion of Mx Greensill, that :a letter of condolence be sent to Air tiifa ''Mrs,;-: Seyttiour < •",■ '■'.■•-/|; • y.; i ::; ..VV •.: t' ftli6Htineral;;;of:. iihe: late, : Misfe,,: Seyr -, inpuir ;t^k place oil Saturday afteriwnV'and^ taiere w^ alarge ntimber <of' teopi# present ffaroiaa iftll Darts of •the province.
