PICTON v. s.s. KAIKOURA

The first of the series of games arranged between these teams took place on Nelson Square, Picton, on Saturday, before a good crowd of people. Kaikoura won the toss, and the town team kicked off with the sun in,their faces, but under these adverse conditions they quickly made the pace warm, and the boat team were kept busy defending. Fine defensive work by their centre-half, however, kept Picton at bay. Gradually 'tho seamen asserted themselves, and for a time more than held their own. forcing in the corner; but the

effort proved fruitless. Good defensive work by Stocker and Carter Bros, brought Picton out of many a tight place. Again the town team took up the running/Sand Barratt had hard luck, hitting the post with a high shot. Give-and-take play followed, and when the whistle sounded for half-time neither side had^ scored. The boat team re-arranged their side at the interval. Kaikoura kicked off and made a determined attack, E. Carter relieving with a good kick. Fine play on.the wing by Goer again gave the town team a chance, which was not accepted, the full back, removing the danger. At the other end the seamen had the goal at their mercy, but over-eagerness spoiled a good opening, their right outside shiooting behind. Five minutes from time "Barratt gave Picton the lead, and they held the advantage to the end, pressing the visitors ■' severely Final: Picton 1, Kaikoura 0. The game was a very good one-, considering that the teams had practically ,no training. At times the pace was very fast. Some of the Picton\,men would do well not to handle the ball as they were penalised time and agnin in; the second half for this breach of the rules. Another match has been arranged between the teams for Thursday, when it is hoped that the seamen will draw Jevel.
