.Mr W. C. Gilbert, of San Fvancisco, -orho visited Rom© recently, tells a story, ©f the Pope. An artist with more 'influence than talent, secured permision to paint his portrait. He minted on a small canvas, and, when he completed = the work, begged the Pope to autograph the masterpiece. The portrait was wretched enough to make even a Pope angry; but Pope Pius dutifully signed his name, and under the signature inscribed a reference, in chapter and verse, to the New Testament. ... The gratified artist afterwards looked up the reference, and, say his friends, he has never been the same man since. The passage to which the Pope had referred him read thus: —"It is I; be not afraid."
