CHRISTjCHURCH, July 20. Miss Ewart, matron at the Christchurch Hospital, and for twenty-one years a nurse in^ district institutions, recently asked for an .increase in her salary, £120 per annum being her pay-' An increase nearly all round the staff was granted, but the matron was1 refused. She wrote stating that lier duties commenced at 9 a.m. and ran on till midnight, and often longer. She placed her resignation in the han<ds of the Hospital Board, which accepted it, and advertised for a successor at £150 per year, but giving Miss Ewart six months' full pay. ; A petition signed by '546 -patients and ex-patients has been sent to the editor of the Lyttelton Times, to be forwarded to t"he matron via the Board, asking her to reconsider her decision.
