The race for the championship of Australia and £100 ; aside, between Thoroughgood and Fogwell, was rowed 'on the Raymond Terrace course of the Hunter River yesterday. From an even start Thoroughgood was soon a quarter of a length in the lead, which he held to past the halfmile; then Fogwell drew level, rowing stroke for stroke.

An exciting struggle1 ensued to the mile, which was covered in smin 30 sec. '' Just^ beyond, the mile both oarsmen, in taking the' ' middle of the river, fouled, and both appealed. Thoroughgood ,was quicker jn getting going again, and established a lead of six lengths before Fogwell fairly started in 'pursuit. ■ Though Fogwell stuck gamely to the finish he1 was unable to overhaul Thoroughgood, who won by eight lengths iri 18min SO 2-Ssec.

The^ umpire declared Thoroughgood the winner.
