[PREBS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, July 18. \ The Maori Congress yesterday <de■bated the question of zemoving the legislative distinction >between .the races, hut the general opinion 'was in favour oi adhering to the existing system forsthe present. \ Another •question -dealt with was the liquor traffic.- One member .presented a petition with 14;O00 signatures.,' ,to we followed ihy nine similar, petitions,' praying that either liquor should be prohibited altogether to Maoris and half-castes in native settlements, orj that power he given -to the Maoris <to vote as to whether liquor should bo supplied to them. - • The Congress passed a resolution approving the prayer of the petition, and calling attention to the fact that the present law is often violated.
