SETTLEMENT BY CONTRACT
The ATTORNEY-GENERAL, replying to the Hon. Mr McOardle, said that he would bring under the notice of die Finance Minister the -question that no provision for advances under the Advances to Settlers Act had been made for those taking v- land unde"iprivate contracts with natives and other landowners. .The Hon. Mr McCARDLE mentioned that in the King - Country alone there was 200,000 acres so affected. SECOND READINGS. The Incorporated Societies Bill, New Zealand Accountants Bill and Meikle Acquittal Bill were vead a second time. ; . A MUCH-CRITICISED. CASE. In referring to the last-named Bill, The Hon. Mr jENKINSON mentioned the Invercargill case in which a man was recently sentenced by tho Supreme Coiirfc to three months' imprisonment for altering a certificate to enable him to obtain work, and iheught that the Government, in considering" the petitions on the matter, might have allowed the man to go free.
The ATTORNEY-GENERAL, in renly, said tha,t the most careful consideration had been given to the case by the Government, and if Mr Jenkinson wero, aware of all the circumstances he would I; ot ask this or any other Government to release fche man. In the interest of the man. concerned ne did not think it- prudent to produce the papers in the case, but he mrala do so if desired. . The Council adjourned at 3.15 p.ncu
