The breakers- lifted the steamer well on to the bar, but when in the trough of the waves she stuck momentarily. This occurred twice, - but by good seamanship the Waihi ;.■„_ brought in safely.. Capt. Carey ■"'/■ states that although the sea was not r the heayiest he has seen on the bar, "' :. it was the heaviest he has ever crossed in on. The vessel was drawing about six feet. While the Waihi waa her buffeting the Blenheim's skipper was watching proceedings, and on the Waihi's getting inside Capt. Watson apparently considered that the channel was not safe fbr_ the larger steamer to attempt, and took in his anchor and shaped a course for Picton, where he arrived at 9 p.m. The Blenheim got awa*; trom that port for Wellington at midnight, hating on board a full complement of football enthusiasts who WIW, get their moneys : worth.
