Syms, Picton. * Australasia is represented in this year's Royal Academy by no fewer than twenty-one artists, and on the whole flhe quality of their work is distinctly very good. In two instances Australian artists have been signally ! successful—namely, Mr Bertram Mackennal and Mr Harold* Parker, each of whom has had a statue bought ■by the trustees of the Chantry bequest at, it is stated, the price of £1000 in i each case. These.marbles are among ! the most notable works in this year's show. Mr Mackennal's "Diana" it ian exquisite piece of work, which, acj cording to The Times's critic, is "one lof the most beautiful nudes that any. sculptor of the English school has produced for many a day." The same , critic1 prophesies Mr Mackennal's election as an A.R.A. whenever the! Academy next sees fit to honour a sculptor. The artist depicts the goddess in'a ben iing attitude binding her wounded leg, with a strip of cloth, and the sculptor^has made the pose cn r tirely beautiful. "Mr Parker's "Ariadne" is" also a study in the nude. It depicts a female figure kneeling with bent head, and is a very effective piece of work. ■ The same artist is responsible for a very graceful bronze- statue: • "The, Long, Long Dream of Youth.''
