CHINESE

(Received June 26, 0.10 a.m.)

LONDON, June 25

In the House of Commons, Mr Lyttelton inquired if the British Government proposed to take action ow-

ing to the percentage of deaths amongst Portuguese natives on the Rand, which was seventy-two per thousand, while among Chinamen it was only twelve to, twenty.

Lieut.-Colonel Seely, Under-Secre-tary for the Colonies, .said that the matter was causing the Government great concern. It was primarily for the Transvaal Government, who were making strikingly successful efforts to reduce the mortality; but the Brifr ish Government would co-operate.
