ATKINSON CHALLENGE SHIELD .
SECOND ROUND
The first match oft the second round for the Atkinson Challenge. Shield was played yesterday, the competing teams being Marlborough and Hinekca. The ground -was heavy and wet, and militated agaiust good back flay, but some ,of the forwards,-.par-ticularly the heavy ones, played nice hockey. Hinekoa were outclassed from the first rally, and for the major part were busily engaged m defending their goal. Miss West,, the Hinekoa goal-keeper, played a good defensive game, under the circumstances. She had plenty of work, and repeatedly saved goals being registered against her side. Shortly after the hit-off Marlborough started off with a formidable forward rush, in -which Miss /Dickens shone conspicuously, and from a rally Misi 0. Heffer shot a goal, scoring first blood for Marlborough. The Marlborough backs had little to do in the first spell, save stopping an occasional rush, or sending in a" long return, Miss Healy especially putting plenty of wood behind her strokes. From a corner hit the ball was brought.into a good position in front of the Hinekoa goal, and from a blind rally Miss Ni-'Hot-ton shot the second goal for Marlborough. Starting off again, Miss Furness got possession, and dribbling fast down the field; shot out a beautiful pass to Miss Dickens on the wing, who dribbled., through'the opposition right into the shooting area; she then passed to Miss E. Foster, who shot a neat goal.—Marlborough 3, Hinekoa nil. In the second spell Hinekoa showed to much better advantage, the pale blues making determined efforts to score"; Miss E. Mogridge shining out at. the head of several rushes. A aiice piece of hockey by Miss V. Parker was spoiled by hard hitting, and a corner resulted. From the hitout Miss E. Connolly had her opportunity, and availed .herself of it by shooting the'first goal for Hinekoa. From this Out %he game proceeded^ with varying advantage until justbefore the call of time, wheii Miss Fnr r ness took a deliberate shot at long range, and the Ball. appeared to glance >pff the goal-keeper's stick thrdugh the posts. The whistle went, with Marlborough victors by four goals to one. ' ; <■ • , Mr F. C. Ferry was referee.
• A match between teams representing" Balfour House and Belmont was played on the Wairau Cricket Ground yesterday afternoon. The game throughout was contested in a.most friendly manner,, and ended in a win for/Balfour House by five goals to one. In the first half the winners were much superior, but in the second honours were more even, and Belmont had many chances.
