Mr Harry. Atmore announces that he is a candidate for the Nelson seat at the forthcoming Parliamentary election. •■ ;; ■ ■■'' A cablegram from Sydney It is stated on good authority that Mr Macintosh, president of the Government Savings Bank, has been appointed superindendent of Dalgety and Go's New Zealand business. Oar Havelock correspondent telopraphs that the death occurred' at 1.30 this morning of Mrs Venimore, the wife of an old resident of Havelock. The : deceased lady had long been a sufferer from paralysis, and her illness was borne with great patience and fortitude. She avOI be greatly missed by a large number of friends. A very pleasant cerenlmy took place in the commercial room^. of the Masonic Hotel, Nelson, on Saturday evening' last, when the popular host Mr Harry Baigent was the recipient from Nelson and visiting friends oi a souvenir on the occasion of his birthday. Some twenty of the leading citizens and visiting friends were present, the health of the "Guest" being enthusiastically drunk, to the accompaniment of musical honours, highly eulogistic reference being made as to Mr Baigent's untiring courtesy to his patrons, his ever-ready support in the interest of sport, and his willingness at all times to support any movement likely to benefit the district.—Colonist. . ..'."• South Marlborough (says the Kaikoura Sun) joins with. North in fegretting the decision of the Hon. C. I. Mills not to seek re-election for Wairau. His career in Parliament has been one of undoubted usefulness to New Zealand and the constituencies lie has ably,- faithfully, and zealously Represented in Parliament. As a Minister of the Crown he proved a genuine-: ly capable administrator of the departments under his control, and, in all respects, one the Liberals had good reason to feel unmeasured confidence in for grejit purpose and political uprightness; 'Should he be disposed to accept appointment, we hope to see him become a Legislative Councillor. Though he has earned the sweets of retirement from the "hurly burly" of public life, it is hoped that he will be nrevailed upon to serve the Dominion for, at least, a few years longer.
