On Wednesday evening 'the5 townspeople, headed by his' Worship the Mayor and Mrs Maitland, entertained Captain White-Parsons and the officers of the Wakanui at a farewell dance prior to their departure from the port. The function, which took the form of a Cinderella dance, was held in Fay's Hall. It was a most sociable and enthusiastic affair, and was brought to a conclusion about 'midnight with "Auld Lang Syne" and 'the "National Anthem." Last evening the usual fortnightly parade of the Waitohi Rifles was held m Fay's Hall. The sections were first exercised by their, respective commanders. Lieuts. Lloyd and McIntosh then took the half companies in hand, and the parade was brought to a conclusion by a short address by the captain on "discipline." Several new members were .proposed. The crew of,the Wakanui played a final game of "soccer" against a Picton team on Nelson Square on Wednesday afternoon, and thanks to the tuition given by the ship's team in the other matches the local team showed great improvement, and succeeded in winning by three' goals to one. The game was "willing" from start to finish, and was played in the best of good humour. On this occasion the visiting team were without the services of some of their prominent players, the officers and engineers, who were on duty preparing for the departure of the vessel.
