A sharp shock of earthquake was felt at Woodviile at 9.50 yesterday morning. A Woodville Press Association telegram states that the road through the Gorge is now cleared, after having been closed for years. It has not yet been declared open for traffic. A peculiar clause was contained in the will of the late Mr Donald Williamson (says the Ashburton Guardian). It provided that—should the property be sold—all the aged horses in his' possession at the time of his death should be destroyed. As Mr Williamson was known to be a man of kindly disposition, who would discountenance any ill-treatment of dumb animals, it is probable that the strange clause contained in'the will was dictated by his humanity and a fear lest his old servants might, through falling into bad hands, be subjected to rough treatment ir sold under ( the hammer. A few days ago the requirements of the will were carried put, and several of these horses were driven to the Ashburton abattoir, where they ended their existence. A meeting of the A. and- P. Association was held on Saturday afternoon there being present: The President (Mr R. McArtney), Messrs Neville, Gifford, Sharp, Dick, Bishell, Boyce, A.McCallum and D. McCallum. A large amount of business was transacted, but a full report is unavoidably held over till to-morrow. Among other things it was resolved on the motion' of Mr Neville tllat the Rugby Union be allowed grounds for matches (not practice) at 10 per cent, of gross takings. Any fencing removed to be reinstated, and any required improvements to be made at their own expense. This to include right of grandstand but not other buildings, and they to indemnify the Association against all damage to property. This, of course, applies only to the time when the ground is not required by the Association. Just received, at Express Office, A In Memoriam" cards, in very choice tJesfcms.
