DRUNKENNESS AMONG YOUTHS
[PKESS ASSOdIATION.I
DUNEDIN, June 1. At the annual meeting of the Dunedin Licensing Committee to-day, Mr Widdowson, S.M-> read the report from the police inspector and sub-in-spector as to women and youths drinking in hotels, made at the special request of the Bench. Women certainly could be seen going into hotels with jugs or bottles to procure liquor for home consumption, said the report, but it was extremely rare to see women in hotels consuming liquor. There were instances when young men just over eighteen had been arrested in a condition of drunkenness, but hotelkeepers generally appeared anxious to prevent juveniles from frequenting licensed premises. The practice was for young fellows to procure liquor in bottles for consumption, and drink the contents in the street. " v The chairman-said that the Committee >vere of opinion that hotelkeepers ought not to permit young men who had been drinking in their bars to get liquor to take away with them. _ The practice should be discontinued. Bottle-license holders should recognise that it was against the laws to supply young persons with liquor, even though in bottles. , All renewals and transfers were granted.
