PICTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The usual monthly meeting of the above Council was held yesterday evening, when, there were present: The Mayor (Mr G. Maitland), and Councillors Philpotts, SimmondSj Peek, Smith, Pugh, and Riddell. LEAVE OF ABSENCE. Leave of absence •'was granted to Councillor Wilkins. CORRESPONDENCE. The Railway Department wrote re wa^er supply on the west side of the harbour for wharf works.—Resolved that the matter be left in the hands of the Waterworks Committee to deal with. A letter was received from Opunake asking, for particulars re acetylene gas. —The Town Clerk had replied. W. J. Webster's application for a slaughter license was granted. J. Everett and W. A. McLean sent a petition asking for early closing for jewellers, they being a majority of those trades. —Postponed till - next meeting. The Department of Internal Affairs acknowledged the notice of the election of G. Maitland, Esq., as Mayor. Mr D'Arcy Chaytor wrote asking that the Council undertake the extension of the Wellington Street drain, charging him with his share of the cost.

' G. M. Blizzard wrote asking for a new truck and hose reel.—Referred to Waterworks Committee and Town Clerk, with power to act. ; The Secretary of the Institute wrote for the annual grant of £12 10s, and asked that the. Council appoint a member.—The Mayor was appointed. Messrs Smith and Co. asked to have permission to erect scaffolding at the new Terminus Hotel.—Granted.

The Fire Brigade wrote asking that Mr A. G. Fell's name be removed as Fire Inspector, and that Capt. D. ii. Godfrey be appointed. FIRE BRIGADE.

Mr A. Clinch waited on the Council re the Brigade, and read the balancesheet and supplied particulars as to finance. Lieutenant Fredericks also attended and kave a detailed account of t?h& Brigaded? plant, hose, etc. It was decided that arrangements be made for the Council to meet the Brigade, at a< w^t practice on Monday night next, and inspect the plant, and that the • hose-reel be repaired.

GENERAL. ' . The Mayor mentioned the deputation's interview with the Minister for Marine re the Fire .Brigade station site and other matters.

The storekeepers asked tct have Empire Day declared a public holiday, and their request was acceded to. The_ Mayor mentioned that Auckland Street was now being metalled. Resolved that the question of steamers whistling be brought before the notice of the Minister for. Marine the nqxt day." , Re the question of a nuisance in Auckland Street, it was resolved that the Town Clerk write to Mr Webster asking him to abate the nuisance at once. ■■'■■.-■

Councillor Riddell reported on Mr Conway's application, and moved that the repairs be affected in Angle Street. It was resolved that water be connected in York Street. It was resolved that Mr Reynolds be written to in reference to the plans for drautage. Councillor Riddell moved, andCoun-Tj.--Pm\i:il seconded pro forma: lhat tenders be called for 300 yards «f ; rock metal from ■ Fredericks' s quarry."—The ' motion was withdrawn, and it was decided that the daymen do the work, the High Street ruts to be filled in with rock metal rrom the quarry. -- It was decided that metal be placed on the Wairau Road from the Clarendon Hotel to Kent Street. , , It was resolved that a rail be placed m_the new formation at Fell's Hill. t> Res^ ed that the notice board near Kound Street ■be placed on a separate post. :, It was decided to render an account against those who broke one of the_Corporation lamps, calling on immediate payment, otherwise proceedings would be taken against them. . Accounts amounting to. £187 13 S were passed for payment.
