RIFLE SHOOTING.

A successful season appears 'to be assured for the Renwick Defence Rifle Club, judging from the announcement made by ■ the President (Mr Wm. Tapp) at a meeting held on Wednesday last to allot trophies for the ensuing season's shooting. Besides the amounts annually voted by the Club for purchase of trophies Mr F. Dillon, oi Leefield Station, has signified' his intention of presenting a trophy to be fired for under conditions to be fixed subsequently. The President offered a medal for the first marksman notching the "possible" at any range; Mr Jno. Newman, of Waihopai, a trophy to be fired for under conditions to be. decided by the Club, and Mr E. Cheesmari, the f deservedly popular boniface of Renwick, stated his intention of presenting a second '* 'Cheesman" cup, his first presentation having been won outright by Mr' H. Ching. No doubt members will show their appreciation of the interest taken by these gentlemen in the Club by making the competition for these trophies more than usually keen.

As an instance of the active interest taken by some members of an institution as compared with the lack of interest shown by others, it was stated by Mr Wm. Tapp at a meeting of the Renwick Defence Rifle Club on Wednesday last that he very often had t<> travel a distance of 44.miles to attend a meeting. This, on occasions, had put him to great inconvenience, and had lost him more time than he could spare. He had therefore concluded that he should have to resign his position as President of the Club, ,his business interests being too far distant to allow of his carrying out his duties to the Club as well as he could wish. Members would not hear of Mr Tapp resigning, his position, reference being made to the services 'he had rendered to the Club and, to the progress it had made during his term of office, and eventually Mr Tapp was prevailed on to withdraw his resignation.- -
