A MINER'S DEATH.
EVIDENCE AT THE INQUEST.
fpBESS ASSOCIATION.] '" AUCKLAND, May 2. An inquest is proceeding at Mercer on the acident at the Union Collery C!o>mpany?s mine .at Maramarua, in which Herbert Ferguson was killed.
Evidence was, given to the effect that when'Quigg started work at 8.30 a.m. he did not consider the roof too good. He tested it with a bar, and pronounced, it just shelly; but the deputy-manager said that he gathered from Quigg that the roof was practically safe. Another miner stated that during the three days he was working he had seen coal falling at the locality of the accident. He fully expected that there would be an accident,because of the quantity of coal that fell after the shots, but did not consider that the coal was dangerous. These statements were pointed out to be irreconcilable; but the1 witness said that he would adhere to them.
