A Press Association telegram states that for April /the births in Christchurch numbered 169, against 217 last year; the deaths 65, against 101, and the marriages 126, against 105.
In Blenheim, during the month of April, rain fell on seven days, as follows:—sth, .07 inches; 17th, .38; 18th, .035; 20th, 60; 21st, .17; 22nd, 16; 26th, .31. ..Mr T. C. Prichard, of Spring Creek, states that the rainfall for April was 1.81 inches. The most rain for one day fell on the 21st, when 72 points were recorded. The rainfall for April, 1907, was 2.04 inches.
The season for shooting native and imported game jopened to-day, and will remain open till 31st July next. Game that may be killed is:—Hares, Californian quail and grey duck. This game may only be killed in such areas as are not already closed and reserved.
The following candidates have been nominated for election as members of the Spring Creek Road Board:—H. C. Cheesman, W. B. Tytler-Fraser, W. Murray and G. E. Sadd. An election for three members will take place on Wednesday next.

Many sportsmen began operations on Lake Ellesmere this morning, being the opening of the shooting season (says a Christchurch Press Association telegram). Other spots were also well patronised. Game are said to be fairly plentiful, and good bags are anticipated. The restrictions placed on sportsmen by the new gaming laws are calculated to minimise'•'pot-hurft-ing." '
Mr E. 11. James, with J. T. Dixon for-chauffeur, accomplished the run from Christchurch to Hanmer and back yesterday in under ten hours Y&ays a Press Association telegram).' The country is very rough for fast motoring, and the leaf is- considered a great one. The car was a ten horse-power Stuart. Dixon considers it possible to do the .journey, under fair conditions, in 8J hours. /

The greater part of the meeting of creditors in re ; L. H. King yesterday was taken up by" Mr Conolly (solicitor for Dalgety and Co. and Clouston and Co.) endeavouring, apparently s with some success, to .elicit, the fact that bankrupt had given a bill of sale over his furniture in favour of the National Bank at a time when his affairs were hopelessly involved.- olt is probable that -the other creditors will contest the legality of the bill of sale. °
The Customs revenue for the port of Wairau during April amounted to £1002 10s 9d, the beer' duty for the same period being £70. The revenue from the port; of Picton amounted to £80 0s 6d. The figures for the cor-i responding poriod of last year are: Customs revenue £1195 18s 6d, showing a decrease of £193- 7s 9d, and beer duty £90, showing a decrease during last month of £20. The Customs return's'for the port of Picton for the month of April last year amounted to £27 17s 6d.

The weather conditions as shown in to-day's weather report were almost idyllic this morning. Generally there was a promise of a calm clear day, there having been no rain during the night and but very little wind. The temperature was mild and equable, the highest being that of Auckland with 64, and the lowest Bjdclutha (43). There was a frost at Christchurch. The. sea generally was marked smooth, practically the only exception being at Kaipara1 Signal Station, where "considerable swell" was the chart reading. ■ jF ■'-■'■■■ ' ■■ ' ' annual meeting of the Kiwi Hockey Club took place at the Club Hotel last night. There-was a good attendance of members. A satisfactory balance-sheet was rfead and adopted. Mr D. A. Sturrock was elected president, Drs. Adams, Bennett, Pentreath, and Messrs A. McKay and A. McCallum vice-presi-dents. Mr N. Fisk was re-elected captain, Mr D. Robertson vice-cap-tain, and Mr N..Paton secretary and treasurer. Eleven new members were enrolled. It was decided to open the season to-morrow. Three valuable trophies for competition have been donated. One will be given for best attendance at practices, one for the best forward in the team, and the other for the best back. Practices will be held on Wednesdays. -jj
