MAYOR OF CHRISTCHURCH DEFEATED.

[FROM (TOW OORftESPONDENI.] CiiRISTCHtRCH, April 30. The defeat of Mr George Payling, the present Mayor of Christchurch, by Councillor Charles Allison came as a great surprise. It is attributed to over-confidence on the part of Mr Payling's supporters, who regarded his return as a foregone conclusion, and many of them difl riot trouble to record their votes.

Mr. Allison was formerly Town Clerk and Surveyor to the Borough of Sydenham, which position he held until the absorption of Sydenham into Greater Christchurch. The new Mayor follows the occupation of an architect and builder.
