THE GAMBLING EVIL.

MR. NORTH AND THE GAMBLING

ACT.

STATEMENTS TRAVERSED

[press association.]

AUCKLAND, April 29. Interviewed regarding the Rev. J. J. North's statements as to the necessity for amending the Gaming Act in regard to racing, the Hon. Mr Mitchelson, Chairman of the Auckland Racing Club, said that his club nearly two years ago had taken the initiative in regard to suppressing bookmakers altogether. He admitted that Mr North had touched upon the weak spot in regard to our racing, viz., the regulation of totalisator clubs. The representatives of the metropolitan clubs at the Racing Conference would willingly agree to reduce the number of clubs and days of racing, but they were out-voted by the representatives of the country. No doubt there was far too much racing. He agreed with Mr North as to the Necessity of urging on the Government the suppression of non-totalisator clubs,, the restriction of totalisator clubs and the prohibition of proprietary racing.
