THE QUARTER'S RETURNS

The Post and Telegraph and Post Office Savings Bank returns for the quarter ending 31st March last show an encouraging increase in the amount of business transacted through the post and telegraph offices of the Dominion.

The commission on money orders totalled £3035 10s 3d, thouo-h this is a decrease of £1645 6s 6d for the corresponding period of last year. The stamp revenue, however, more than makes up for this deficiency, last quarter's revenue from this source amounting to £98,014 16s, as against £90,335 15s 10£ d for the first quarter of 1907 '

The total amount of the postal revenue for the quarter shows an increase over the first quarter of last year of £2187 14s Bid, the figures being £112,034 lls 7d and £109,846 16s 10H respectively. The telegraph revenue shows an increase of £6728 18s s^d, the same two periods being compared as with the postal figures. Revenue from telegrams amounted to £61,272 9s 2d, as against £58,337 9s 2d for the corresponding period of 1907. The revenue from the telephone exchanges galled £71,580 19s Id, as against .to/,050 15s 4d—a very substantial increase.

MONEY ORDERS. During last quarter 114,778 money orders were issued in the Dominion, representing £510,181 7s 6d, being an increase in value over the first quarter of last year of £43,812 3s Be}. The total number of money orders paid was 89 209, leaving 25569 unpresented. The outstanding value of these unpresented orders is £66,351 13s 4d. SAVINGS BANK RETURN

The number of savings bank offices open at the ond of last quarter in the Dominion was 567, the number of accounts opened was 22,109, and the number closed 14,946. Total number of deposits 180,617, withdrawals 113.543. Amount of deposits £2,- ---( 542,187 13s 2d, amount of withdrawals j £2,382.934 16s 9d. The excess of deI posits over withdrawals amounted to j £159,252 16.3 sd.
