PHASES OF THE MOON.
New moon ' May 2, 8.6 p.m. First quarter May 9, 3.57 p.m. Full moon May 16, 4.1 p.m.
The Union Company's steamer; Mararoa is once more on her way to New Zealand, having been withdrawn from the Sydney-Hobart service. She left Newcastle on Thursday for Lyttelton direct, and on arrival there on Tuesday next will be docked for cleaning and painting. On May Ist the Mararoa will relieve the Rotomahana in the ferry service, and the latter vessel will withdraw and go to Australia. The Zealandia, of the Huddart-Parker line, has been chartered by the Union Company, and ■will replace the Mararoa in the Syd-ney-Hobart trade. Just .after 3 p.m. yesterday, passing outwards, the Opawa got off the line of river beacons, and keeping too much to westward struck the western shoal, remaining there for about half an hour. Had the weather not been so favourable she was in a dangerous position, and even as it was had to "be assisted by Mr Baldick's launch, which happened to be close at hand. The Blenheim crossed inwards at 2.30 this morning, on the lights, and apparently did not touch, which shows that with care the bar is negotiable even on a very dark night, providing ther'b is not too much sea.
