EASTER IN NELSON.

UNPROPITIOUS WEATHER. THE VOLUNTEERS' CAMP. BOWLING MATCHES. OmOM OUR CORRESPONDENT.] NELSON, April 18. The weather for the holidays so far has not been propitious. Rain fell at intervals yesterday, and last night set in steadily. The military manoeuvres are being carried out at Redwood's Valley, fifteen miles from Nelson, and the attendance of Volunteers is small, less than three hundred being present. The Blenheim, and Waitohi Rifles and the Blenheim Half-Battalion Band arrived yesterday morning, and entrained shortly after for the scene of operations, joining the attacking force (Blue) commanded by Lieut.Col. Chaytor. In the afternoon the Blue force left camp for the western entrance, and will attack the Red force under Lieut-Col. Harkness, which will retire and pitch camp some miles this side of Redwood's Valley. The manoeuvres are being carried out strictly on service lines, and the troops will work night and day until Sunday morning. Colonel W. H. Webb is the representative of the Defence Council at the manoeuvres. The arrangements at the camps are very satisfactory, but the weather is wretched. _ Newtown and Picton have sent rinks to play bowling matches during the Easter holidays. On the Nelson green yesterday afternoon ; Picton were defeated by/the Nelson Club by 88 to 32. The scores were: Nelson (Heaps's rink) 28, Picton,, (G. Smith. L. Smith, Chambers and Pugh, skip) 10; Nelson (Dickson's rink) 25; Picton (Philpotts, Greensill, Madsen and Nicol, skip) 12; Nelson (E. Trask's rink) 35; Picton (Martin, Blizzard, Perano and Vickers, skip) 10. Newtown defeated Maitai (Nelson) by 95 to 65. Weather permitting, return matches will be played to-day, and Picton will: play Maitai; but rain is at present (10 o'clock) falling steadily.
