ATHLETICS.

A SECEDING SOCIETY

[press association.] INVERCARGILL, April 1. A special meeting of the Winto'h Caledonian Society, the oldest Caler donian Society in Southland, was held last evening to consider the withdrawal of the Southland Caledonian Society from the New Zealand Athletic Union. The meeting was attended by Messrs Woods and Mussen, of the New Zealand Athletic Union, and Timpany and Paape, of the Southland Caledonian Society, who addressed the meeting on their respective sides; after which the following resolutions were carried unanimously: (1) That this Society cannot see its way to support the Southland Caledonian Society in seceding from the New Zealand Athletic Union; (2) that this Society considers the action of the Southland Caledonian Society was not maturely considered, hence we regret their action, and sincerely trust that in the interests of athletics of the Dominion they will reconsider their decision.
