; + .__ ■ •• „ DOG REGISTRATION CASE. /' At the Magistrate's .Court yesterday morning, before Mr T. Scott Smith, S.M., Frank Shaw was charged with hot having -registered two dogs as required by the Act. Defendant pleaded not guilty. The (Mr D. P. Sinclair) said that defendant wished for a ruling on the points that would be raised. The collector, it appeared, called upon defendant on 14th February and asked for;the 5s which was due on each dog. Defendant then said he had no money on him, and he asked the collector to call again. Defendant afterwards left the town, and the collector was thus unable to obtain the money. The prosecution contended that, even allowing that the collector1 had called upon defendant, it was his (defendant's duty to pay the fee, or make .arrangements for its being paid within +he prescribed timer - The collector, gave evidence which corroborated that given by Mr Sinclair. ■' The collector, in answer/to a question, stated that when defendant came back*to Blesheim he had offered to pay 5s for each dog, but as1 it was then after the proper time he could not accept less than 10s per. dog. For the defence, A. J. Maclaine gave evidence in which he stated that c took charge of the dogs for defendant in January, and kept -them until Mr Ross took a dog away in February. ' ■ .. " ■ .. Defendant admitted owing 10s, but said he had made arrangements with the collector for the payment of the money. s The question now was whether he was liable for the payment of 10s for each Hog. ■; In giving judgment the .Magistrate -pointed out .that defendant; had until ;, 28th February to paiy the , amount. , He. imposed a fine of 2s 6d/for each dog, and in addition defendant would have to pay the registration fee 'of lus for each dog/ No costs were allowed: A musterer, at Weld's Hill named John Robertson, for having failed to register six dogs, was fined Is for each dog, and was also ordered to pay ; the fees due (2s 6d for each dog). j Costs amounted to 14s, which he had* to, pay. . ' PROHIBITION CASE. Thomas Harding, who was represented by Mr McNab, came before the Court in regard to a prohibition order which had been applied for some time ago, and was adjourned for a month, the police having power to bring; the mater forward at any time 'it might be desirable to do so.
