JACK IN LIQUOR.

ANOTHER EXHIBITION AT

CHRISTCHURCH

ONE SEAMAN ARRESTED

[press association.]

CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 10. A disturbance was in ■Cathedral Square last night by three seamen, all more or les*s drunk, •careering through the streets. The police stopped them, and after a struggle two got away, but one was arrested, along with a civilian, who •encouraged them to resist. '

Large crowds gathered, hooting the police.

: "Jack" was very much ashore at the Christchurch Opera House on ! Thursday night, according to The Press, which gives interesting details i about the incident chronicled in The Expsess last week. Bluejackets and I marines, after loading up' internally fat hotels, invaded the Theatre with I their bottles of beer and whisky. The 'vessels passed 'from mouth to mouth,, and the gurgling steadily made the . drinkers very turbulent. They lighted mellow pipes, and poured foul smoke, as well as annoying language, into the arena. One of .the disturb- ■ erg leaned against the, footlights, "inj dulging m a running fire «f disconj certing remarks." The roysterers I made their way into the stalls and , dress circle. "In both departments," i says TLe Press "their conduct was iiinost objectionable and unseemly. One. ?of the •bluejackets waved a bottle of i beer in the air just before the perj formance commenced, and wished i everybody a shaky, but hearty, happy New Year. 'The contingent of marines also made merry with whisky and bottles of soda. One fell into a sound slumber, and his snores made the I welkin ring. For greater comfort he rested his Tegs and feet on the shoulders of an 'inoffensive civilian lower <Ldwn, and. was still sleeping the sleep of the unjust when the performance "terminated.'"
