[press association.] AUCKLAND, J&n. 8. Details of the Kaukapakapa tragedy show that it was the result of a iumdiggers' quarrel. ' Wm. Stuart, a man about 60, killed Edward West, aged 45, by chopping him with an axe cut on the left side of the skull. The wound was about 5 inches long by 4 inches The accused, in a statement to the constable, said that he and West were in a whare. He (Stuart) had an axe .in his hand, chopping wood. Wert saw -3ome gum in the whare, and •said: "You , you did not scrape all your guml" "In a moment I i chopped him on the head. I saw his ,eyes opening and shutting, and knew that.he was;dead."
