NEGLIGENT OFFICERS.
DRIVER AND GUARD SUS-
PENDED
[press association.] NAPIER, Dec. 31. The driver and guard of the early morning train from Waipukurau to Dannevirke last Friday have been suspended. : It seems that the train was scheduled to cross a sheep special at Mangatere, but but failed to wait there, and rtui right on to Dannevirke. Fortunately the sheep special had been delayed shunting at Dannevirke, and was, just about to leave when the Waipukurau train steamed, in, a collision beiug thus averted. A preliminary enquiry was h eld by the responsible officers.of the Department at Waipukurau on Saturday, and the results, forwarded on to the General Manager and the Minister. : The men are old, steady and reliable servants, with between 16 and 20 years' service. They offer no excuses, and accept all blame, admitting that they, quite overlooked or Jjbrgot the crossing station.
