Wairau Bar (noon): —The Bar is smooth, the tides good, and the depth of water 6ft. Bin. The Waihi crossed inwards at 3.30 p.m. yesterday, and the Blenheim and Opawa this morning at 4.15 and 4.20 respectively. They are all expected to cross outwards again this afternoon at about 5 o'clock.
Shipping agents sometimes show little consideration for their skippers in getting vessels away in time to «atch tides, where such have to be depended upon. Despite the fact that a heavy north-westerly gale was blowing the Waihi (Carjt. Carey) was detained in Wellington on Thursday last till nearly 9 p.m., and once outside Wellington Heads the little steamer liad a hard task in steaming against the elements. She made a good trip, over, considering, and arrived off the bar an hour after high water, and was compelled to drop anchor in Cloudy Bay. She did not reach the wharf till 5 p.m. yesterday.
A Sydney exchange states that Hobart merchants are complaining at the treatment they are receiving from £he Union Steam Ship Company, and intend arranging for other steamers than those of the company's fleet to -carry Tasmanian timber~to New Zealand, and also hint that another line <oi steamers will commence running at an early date in opposition to the Union Company. This state of affairs has been brought about owing to the TJnkm Company despatching their vessels from Hobart on many occasions •without taking quantities of timber -that have been lying on the wharves waiting shipment. The exporters state that they have suffered considerable loss through the company acting in this way, and, despite the fact that they have complained to the head office, it still continues. This is certainly a peculiar situation for the shippers to be in, and if, as they state, ■the TJnion Steam Ship Company continuously refuse to carry the timber that is wanted in New Zealand ports, the only way to overcome the difficulty js to assist any movement that is on toot to inaugurate an opposition line steamers to run between Tasmania ana New Zealand ports.
