ANTI-ASIATIC MOVEMENT.
SWEEPING PROPOSALS
The Anti-Asiatic League, which has its headquarters in Wellington, is now distributing copies of a handbill which bears the heading, "The Yellow Peril," in black, glaring type. The "principal aims and objects" of the league are set forth as follows: — " To combat evils arising out of the presence of Asiatics in our midst, and to approach the Government from time to time in reference to Asiatic immigration, and advocate as follows:—(a) The necessity of a substantial increase in the present tax; (b) the deportation of all undesirable Asiatics, recognising the principles of compensation if necessary; (c) the recognition of our constitutional rights affecting this question to the fullest extent ,(d) to prevent Chinese from competing unfairly with European business people in regard to working overtime in their laundries and other businesses; (c) to prevent Chinese from employing Europeans or Maoris of either sex, or vice versa; (f) to prevent the intermarriage of Chinese and Europeans; (g) to prevent any further naturalisation of Chinese; (h) the clearing out of Chinese slums in cities and towns.
"This fair young colony of ours," declares the manifesto, " is threatened by a horde of heathen "Asiatics in the very near future, and we, for the sake of those depending on tis, must face this question sooner or later. Let us embrace our opportunity and face it now."
