CANVASTOWN.

(Our Own Correspondent.)

The debate on the land question on Saturday night fell through, owing to some misunderstanding by the party taking up the leasehold side of the debate.

The Golden Point dredge closed down on Saturday. I understand that the structure had to close down because the master wants to leave for the West Coast. However, some of the directors are not in favour of dismantling, or even closing down, although the.master seems most anxious to dismantle.

On Saturday a team of fifteen from the school Hockey Club played a team of seven from the Kia. Ora Club, and after a very interesting match the game resulted in a win for the former by 3 goals to> 2.

The' monthly social held at Deep Creek on Saturday night was a great success. Dancing was kept up till 11.30 p.m. Songs were rendered by Miss M. Diamanti and Messrs G. Reeves - and W. Rassmussen. Music was supplied by Messrs M/'Burke and W. Rassmussen, and Mr John-Living-stone acted as M.C.

On Thursday last a mare belonging to Miss R. Diamanti fell over a perpendicular precipice of 50 feet; and, for a wonder, the mare was not a bit hurt, and Mr Sam Watson led her down through the river and brought her home quite safe and sound. This is the second horse that has gone over the same place belonging to the same family, and both came out safe. The first was old Lofty, many years ago, well-known by the old diggers.
