The condition of Mrs H. W. Horton, who has been seriously ill, is now most hopeful.

Last evening a large number of members of the Blenheim Bowling Club met at the Club Hotel to take farewell of Mr H. A. Jackman, who leaves next Thursday for his new sphere of duties iin Wellington. Mr T. Scott Smith, Vice-President of the Club, occupied the chair, and in proposing the health of the guest of the evening expressed the sorrow of the Club at losing the services of Mr Jackman, its Secretary. The present prosperous position of the Club and the beauty of its lawn and surroundings were, he considered, due in great measure to the efforts of Mr Jackman, who had worked hard and conscientiously. He had also set an example to the younger members of the Club by his assiduous attention to practice. Mr Scott Smith then handed to Mi- Jackman a gold sovereign-case (filled) as a token of the esteem in which the members held him. Several other gentlemen. spoke to the toast, and each paid his tribute to Mr Jackman as a bowler, a clubman, a golfer, a citizen and a courteous Customs officer. The guest's health was drunk with musical honours, and he was unanimously elected the first life-mem-ber of the Club. In responding, Mr Jackman expressed his regret at having to leave Blenheim, and especially the Bowling Club, on whose green he had spent some of the happiest days of his life. He thanked the members for their kind gift, and the sentiments accompanying it. During the evening several songs and recitations were .given, and the gathering passed off in an enthusiastic manner.
