Tpress association.! (Received April 24, 10.57 p.m.) SYDNEY, April 24. The Tsinan's two Chinese were charged in Court to-day with landing in Australia in contravention of the Contract Immigration Act. Counsel for the defence contended that " contract immigrant " meant an immigrant under contract to perform manual labour in Australia. The accused were neither immigrants nor contract immigrants. Action had been taken by some of the strikers to serve private ends. Counsel for the prosecution claimed that the clauses of the Act applied to i men working on a vessel which was a ! foreign vessel so far as Australian I waters were concerned. Pie subniiti ted that the accused had landed in i Australia because they were working : on an Australian boat. I The Magistrate considered that the ] charge had not been made out, and i dismissed the case. | The prosecution intimated that the | case would probably go further. | A large number of strikers watched I the proceedmgs.
